Whos Searching For What?

Now that 2008 is almost over we will be reading about the "Best of" lists about everything from movies to colleges.

But if you want to know what people around the world were searching for, there is no better place to check than Google Zeitgiest.

Browse the website, its interesting to see what people are searching for. And to see how much of that you've even heard about!

Open Letter to Barack Obama

An IT Student sent in an essay to the Post Standard detailing what he felt should be addressed by our next President:

Dear President Barack Obama,

As we go in history, we have seen great people, from Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr. You, elected as president, is another chapter of our history and will always be remembered. I was undecided this election for the fact that you and McCain both could have been great presidents. But you won, so congratulations. I feel you represent all minority groups in some way. To me, you represent my homeland India, because of the fact that you are working with them. I expect you to be not just the first African American president, but the best president.

To me, I feel we should continue the war in the Middle East because we started something and we have to end it. I believe it's too late to end it now. If we do end now, all the soldiers that died for this country would have died for nothing. Universal health care is needed to be supported in which you are doing. Every wealthy country has this except for the USA. I also want to see the US to go on. We are in a recession and our unemployment rate is at its highest. The USA definitely needs change. We should also help not just ourselves, but the world. World Pollution and Global Warming are huge issues. We need an earth friendly environment to see this world to keep going. I can go on and on about what we need, but I believe these are the most important points.

We need a incredible president to turn this around. We need the hope and progress you promised us. Your pleasant smile needs to represent that this country will make a U-turn. At the end, I dream to see our country on the right track.

From an American Citizen,
Sanjeev Kumar

S2S Appendectomy Lesson

In the interests of science I am posting a rather graphic video of a unnamed students appendectomy procedure, of which he is understandably proud.

The Drama Continues.....

As everyone at ITC knows, we've been in limbo since we started here a year ago. The promise of a nice new greystone building for our future home looks dimmer and dimmer with each passing day. The best we are hoping for in the short term is an extension of our present location that will begin at some mysterious future date.

Heres the latest chapter in this sad story.

And Video.

Harold and Kumar go to SU

Well ok, Kumar did anyway! We went to see Kal Penn talk at SU's Asian Awareness Week. It was an interesting talk and the questions following the talk were even funnier! More on the talk here.

Science Town USA

Check out this video of the walking wishbone. Look closely and you will notice that he mechanical energy is transferred directly to the wishbone and it is pulling the entire machine along. The rear wheels are not powered. A very cool invention.

Its one of the many exhibits in the science museums in and around Boston. I've been to Boston many times, but never realized how many different science museums were around. They even have science resturants!! It should be no surprise really, since they have some of the best colleges and universities in the whole country.

Take a look at some slides of some of the best museums in Beantown.

(BTW the Walking Wishbone Machine could make for a pretty cool honors by contract idea!)

More Student Poetry

Destiny
By Sanjeev Kumar

Some people's destiny
Is to make history
Some are hard
Others aren't too far

With many obstacles,
It's going to be difficult
So I have to use my skills
To go up my hill

In my road to glory,
I will get my victory
With hard work,
I'll go beyond my goal.

I know what I have to do,
I won't be no fool.
Every single day,
I will riser higher

Closer to my destiny

Student Poem

Another touching new poem by my favorite poet

While You Are Gone
by Brittany

I’m all confused

Mad

Angry

Happy

What is happening?

Things are different

Starting to find the inner me

Getting closer everyday

With you not here

Makes things harder

Before you were my guide

Now you’re just my inner strength

Keeping me going through words of advice

President Obama

Barack Obama made history by becoming the countrys first African American President. For those of us who were old enough to vote, it was a very special day.

Read this for a good historical look at what this really means for us as a nation.

Halloween

So, what are everyones plans for Halloween? Going trick or treating, or scaring little kids?

Halloween wouldn't be complete without a few scary movies tonight or over the weekend.

Check out some good ones here.

Let me know what your favorites of all time are. And some recommendations too.

Student Poem

A brilliant and touching new poem by an S2S member:

Soon

By Brittany

I don’t want to write

I want my feelings to stay

I’m mad at you all

Who can I trust?

Since you left

I have been a mess

You left me here

It’s been a week

Maybe to learn

Or to be safe

Maybe even just to grow up

I wish to be with you

No more staying up late

I love you when you are awake

Tears are often

When will soon be here?

My heart weakens

It’s been working over time

My body aches

How much longer do I have to wait for a hug from just you?

I took you for granted

I should have never done it

I know your last photos taken

Was the best time of our lives

You were really happy that night

I was too just watching you

I let you leave one Thursday evening

To go fishing

I didn’t stop you

I knew you needed time to think

A few days had gone by very fast

I couldn’t resist looking at the past

Pictures and movies of you

Made me feel you were here giving me a real hug

Like you always do

But now looking back

There are no pictures of just us

I wish there was

So I don’t have to pause reality

To think of our time together

I’m OK right now

Learning about you through another persons eyes

I can’t wait to see yours

Light up and cry

Like mother like daughter

We will see each other soon

Listen to each other speak on the phone every single day

Until the heart of the future takes its last beat

I love you more then the amount of breaths it will ever take

I love you mom

Keeping Up With The Times

A huge part of getting an education involves not just doing well in your academic subjects at school, but following events around the country and around the world. The earlier this becomes a habit, the easier it is to maintain.

Consider the following three questions asked in a recent survey:

1. What party has a majority in the House of Representatives?

2. Who is the Secretary of State of the US?

3. Who is the Prime Minister of Great Britain?

Know the answers? Only 18% of the adult population in the US got all three of those right. That is not just sad its scary. Especially when you know that we have a Presidential election coming up and people have to make some very serious decisions on the future of the country.

Whats interesting is the breakdown on this chart showing the various reading, viewing and listening habits of people and seeing what the most informed ones are doing right.

ITC students are young and bright. Now is the time to develop those habits that become life long tools for success. Switch from MTV and Hot 107.9 and listen to NPR or CNN for an hour a day.

(Answers: Democrats, Condaleeza Rice, Gordon Brown.)

Regents Review Website

I have posted a new link on the right to give you access to all past regents in all subjects. This will be very helpful in helping you prepare for the Regents exams needed to graduate. Nothing prepares you better to do well in a regents exam than doing the old ones.

Photography Club Outing

Members of ITC's brand new Photography Club went downtown to take some photos of scenes of City life. Look for images coming soon.

New members are welcome! We are also looking for ideas from students on what they would like to see posted around school, or photos we should take and events we should cover.

In The News

We were recently featured on the news, because plans to build us a new school have been delayed for a variety of reasons.

Heres a video of the event filmed in front of our "future home".

(Thanks Sanjeev for finding the clip)

Testing Your Approximate Number Sense

Some interesting new research seems to show that if you are good at finding approximate answers you are usually good at more accurate calculations as well.

Test yourself here and see how good you are! Remember to do it 25 times to get an accurate score.

Physics 101

The world might not exist much past tomorrow! Or so some scientists claim when the massive particle accelerator starts up tomorrow underground on the border between Switzerland and France.

Find out more about this interesting attempt by scientists to understand the origins of the Universe.

Find out more about the Large Hadron Collider here and see some animations here.

If the postings suddenly end, you know what happened! Oh wait, you wont be around either....

ITC Football

The start of our first ever football season was interesting. Interesting because if like me, you arrived more than seven minutes late you missed all the action. The rival team Tully, had two injuries and decided to forfeit. I have to find out if this is the shortest football game in Syracuse City Schools history.
Good luck to the team for the rest of the season!

The End of Summer 2008

Now that summer is coming to an end, its the perfect time to end with a poem by Brittany, that talks about the months that went by.

Summer Of Thinking!!!

the summer went fine
birds still fly
i had a chance to recline

summer vacation has no regrets
i broke up with my boy friend
i went a little crazy

schools almost here
i have no fears
my future is clear

things are much simpler
living is easier
i am still here

don't forget
this is me
i am still thinking

what do i want?

i don't know
but hope to soon

all i know now is....
life doesn't always go the way i plan

i try to find the words in person
i want to tell you "i love you"
but how?

your 100% human
0% negative
90% predictable
99.5% lovable

but saving a life
doesn't always mean stopping someone from death

it can can also mean
helping someone from making stupid decisions
like i have

thanks for helping me along the way

is there more to your words & smile?
what just tell me already

i am hear to listen to your words of pain or happiness
what ever you want to say

just remember i ain't afraid
say what you need to say

summer may be over
but my love for you
will never ever be done for

Be Like Bolt

Anyone else watching the Beijing Olympics? If you're like me, as much as I can get.

But even if you dont, the two names you MUST have heard this summer have to be Michael Phelps (swimming) and Usain Bolt (sprinting). If not, shame on you!

Anyway heres a great way to see how well you would match up against the amazing speed of Bolt. Click here and get your fingers off and running.

Let me know how well you do.

Why We Must Survive

Read this letter by a teacher on the many reasons why the Institute of Technology is so critical to the City of Syracuse. And you only have to ask the students to know its all true!
